This morning, an investigation is underway into the tragic death of Eight Belles

The horse collapsed with two broken ankles right after coming in second at last Saturday's Kentucky derby.  She was put down immediately on the racetrack.

On Fox News,
Dr. Dean Richardson
(who tried to save  Barbaro 2 years ago) claimed that Eight Belles' injury is extremely rare, especially if it happens after the finish.  Richardson continued that Eight Belles had to be euthanized because the horse broke both ankles, not just one.  The industry needs to do more to prevent these injuries according to the horse expert.

Some have said that Eight Belles might have been pushed too hard.  Her trainer said she was clearly a happy horse as she crossed the finish line.
