1.  Back up your hard drive to flash memory

2.  Back up to DVD or CD

While this is perhaps an older way to backup information, it is still very effective, especially if you backup to DVD.  Dual layered DVD's can now hold up to 9 Gigabytes of infmation which blows any floppy disk's capacity out of the water.  Remember that restoring from DVD or CD may also be somewhat difficult because you may have trouble finding files.  

3.  Backup important files to external hard drive

If your computer suffers a hick-up, it may be ruined for good and information on any hard drive may also be lost.  But, if you keep a copy of all your important information on an external hard drive, you will not face this problem.  External hard drives now have a capacity of up to 500 Gigabytes.  This is about the size of the average internal hard drive.  

4.  Use an online service to backup your computer

This is definitely the best way to back up your information safely and effectively.  Services such as carbonite.com charge a very small fee and allow you to backup your information without any effort on your part.  Their system is completely automated.

Whatever of the four options you decide to choose, just make sure you backup information.  Things such as family pictures are irreplaceable!
